Photography is a tool to capture meaningful moments. These moments for me are when I am learning and working with my family and community.
These images are about my curiosity and about lifelong learning. I celebrate working with our hands, the joy of learning together, and being in the moment. It’s not necessarily about accomplishments and the finished product but relationships and the skills one has practiced being able to create. Doing thoughtful work that keeps one in the present, working with the hands, enjoying the process, learning new skills and enjoying the presence of those around us.
Respect for people's histories and backgrounds, knowing everyone has something they can teach you, valuing differences and discovering another’s skill sets are perhaps imperative to survival. Interest in returning to a simpler lifestyle, knitting together family and community, reaching out for connection and caring for neighbors all are themes that seemed to surface during this amazing year of 2020.
Photography is a tool that I use to show the intimate details of texture, line, shapes, shadows, light, movement, story, environment, perspective, timing, intimacy, emotions, and relationships.
What you see before you are candid black and white film images that I shot with a 1981 Canon AE1. I developed the film with chemicals and the images are edited and produced using an Epson Film Scanner. Traditional black and white film photography invites the viewer to focus on detail and the timelessness. I appreciate working with the physical element of the negatives. The “grain” is more desirable to me than digital pixels. The suspense of knowing the detail of an image in the camera body without the digital feedback pushes me to trust my eye.
